Warning!!! This review contains spoilers for the first book in this series, Into the Light.  If you have not read the first book, you probably do not want to read this review.  And what are you waiting for? Into the Light was a fantastic 5-star read!

Aleatha Romig really knows how to get the reader's adrenaline going. Every book that I have read by this author has had me sitting on the edge of my seat, and kept me turning the page well into the night. Away From the Dark is no exception - this is sure to be a hit with suspense and thriller fans.

So Into the Light ended on a huge cliffhanger, and I had to go back and read the last chapter when I started this book so I could remember exactly what happened. Jacob had just gotten a call that Sara did not show up to work, and we find out that she had stopped taking her birth control, which actually contained the memory-suppressing drugs that kept her from remembering her time "in the dark." Away From the Dark actually starts a week before Into the Light ended, and we see (from Sara's POV) that she is starting to get her memory back. Over the course of a few days, Sara remembers who she is, where she is, and how she got there. I was really drawn into Sara's turmoil about her situation... it was really interesting to see Stella fight Sara. I can't imagine how hard it was to have your mind pull you in two different ways - the cult conditioned Sara on one side and the inquisitive headstrong Stella on the other.

In this installment of the duet, we find out exactly who Jacob is and why he came into the light. I had so many conflicted feelings about Jacob in the first book, and I was so happy to find out that my instincts were not wrong. We also see the turmoil that Jacob has felt for his actions in the light and his feelings for Sara... and this created a really great connection with Jacob's character.

So now that Sara has her memory back, things are obviously different between her and Jacob. They are working together to expose The Light, somewhat against Jacob's wishes. His protective instincts for Sara have always been strong, and allowing her to be exposed to more danger does not sit right with him. This is the part of the book that had me on the edge of my seat. The story had so many layers and there was so much danger! It seemed like every corner we turned, we are learning more about Father Gabriel's nefarious plans and dealings. I was definitely not able to predict anything in this book.

I know this review is somewhat vague - but I really don't want to give ANYTHING away for this book. It will be so much better for everyone to find out for themselves as they read. Trust me - you won't be disappointed. This was supposed to be a duet, but the ending was somewhat open-ended giving a hint that there may be a spinoff in the future. And the loose ends shocked me so I really hope we get that spinoff, and soon!

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher, Thomas & Mercer.
