ARC Review: Spells for the Dead by Faith Hunter

Series:     Soulwood #5
Pub. Date:July 28, 2020
Publisher:Ace
Length:384 pgs
Source:NetGalley

I so enjoy spending time with Nell Inghram, our widder-woman who liberated herself from a cult in East Tennessee. Oh, and a yinehi with unique powers and abilities. I have loved watching her come into herself as the series has progressed. As Nell's experiences have grown beyond pizza and Krispy Kreme, she has amassed a family through blood and the land. So Nell is no longer our loner against the church, but now has a team to help fight battles both personal and professional. Her common sense approach to life and solving crimes is endearing and inspiring. And her relationship with Occam, the werecat, is so dang cute that I can't help but smile at their interactions.

#ShareTheLove Giveaway Blog Hop!

It’s time for our annual Share the Love giveaway hop! This hop is a little different and all about sharing our favorite bloggers and authors with you! There’s a giveaway at every blog so visit them all and find out who all we just adore.

This is such a fun idea, and perfect for Valentine's Day. I have come to love and interact with so many great authors and bloggers over the last year, and I am ecstatic to share a few with you. So without further ado, I am sharing the love with the following people who I think deserve a little more attention (in no particular amount or order):

Deanna's World

Now, Deanna is my book bestie. We are horrible influences on each other when it comes to hoarding books or makeup. While we live a world apart, we find ourselves shopping together at least once a week. Heaven help us when we meet in person. So hop on over to Deanna's World. She does great reviews of books and beauty products. And sometimes you will catch us having crazy conversations or interviews with one another.

Addicted to Romance

I found Renee's blog this past year and I find myself peeking in whenever I am about to read something new. We have a lot of the same tastes, and she writes the most detailed and eloquent reviews (without giving spoilers). If you are addicted to romance like we are, she is someone to connect with.

Lily Harlem

I was introduced to Lily Harlem through Deanna, and love to interact with her on social media. Lily writes steamy romance novels and usually has some very interesting blog topics. If you have not read anything by her yet, you should give it a shot. I am particularly excited about one of her new releases, Rule Breaker, which I have scheduled for review this week.

A.D. Starrling

A.D. Starrling was a fabulous find for me last year - particularly since she writes outside of my normal genre. But Seventeen, her action series, knocked my socks off. It got a few 5 star ratings from me, and I am anxiously awaiting the next book. I like to say that her writing is "brainy" - you can be reading about the chemical composition of something or other without even knowing it because your adrenaline is going so high. PLUS - how cool is this - I am getting to name a character in one of her books! This is super duper exciting for me.

Lesley Young

Lesley Young gave me one of my favorite heroines for 2015 in her contemporary romance, The Australian. She is super nice and interactive on social media, and I think more people need to know about her! I hope we get to see more Crime Royalty soon as well!

#Hello2016 Blog Hop and Giveaway!

I would like to welcome all you Babes to Bambiland! We’re ringing in the New Year with lots of giveaways! And by sharing some fun and wacky facts about ourselves. There’s a new giveaway at each stop so be sure to visit them all!

Five Fun Facts about Bambi

  1. My real name is not Bambi. Shocker!!! I got saddled with this fun little nickname back when I was in law school and my friends were frequently saying - I swear, you are the dumbest smart person I know! It somewhat steamrolled from there, to the point where they were introducing me as Bambi when we were out blowing off steam. So now that I have a stuffy government job, I obviously can't be using my real name online... so Bambi Unbridled was born out of a need for anonymity.
  2. I think some of my blog clicks through google were people looking for porn. Hopefully they found some smutty book recommendations while they were here.
  3. I have had 3 separate men come up and lick my face on 3 separate occasions. No joke. I don't know if this is a thing now... or if I just look delicious. I now always carry antibacterial gel in my purse. Has anything like this ever happened to you?
  4. I once got propositioned by the pizza guy when he knocked on the door just as a raunchy sex scene started in the the smutty audiobook I was listening to. You would think I would have learned my lesson when the UPS guy knocked on my door during FSOG. But, no. I did learn after the pizza guy though - now I wear Bluetooth earphones when I am cleaning the house and listening to an audiobook!
  5. My most embarrassing moment of 2015 was when I got locked out of my house in my nightgown and had to crawl through the doggy door. My boobs got stuck. (Are you seeing the reason for my nickname now?)
So - what's this blog all about? It's nonsense really. It's all about book boyfriends, romance, comedy and swoonworthy moments. I will occasionally throw in a literary or thriller type read to broaden my horizons and give me a little break from my unattainable romantic fantasies. This year may see some new features come to the blog... I have toyed with posts about naturally curly hair woes, trying to follow the paleo lifestyle, and even craft projects. If you would like to see any of these features or have recommendations on what you would like to see from Bambi - give me a shout out below!

Blog Tour: Morning's Journey by Kim Iverson Headlee

Morning's Journey
by Kim Iverson Headlee
Series:  The Dragon's Dove Chronicles #2
Pub. Date:  Dec. 16, 2014
Publisher:  Pendragon Cove Press
Genre:  Fantasy
Pages:  422

In a violent age when enemies besiege Brydein and alliances shift as swiftly as the wind, stand two remarkable leaders: the Caledonian warrior-queen Gyanhumara and her consort, Arthur the Pendragon. Their fiery love is tempered only by their conviction to forge unity between their disparate peoples. Arthur and Gyan must create an impenetrable front to protect Brydein and Caledonia from land-lusting Saxons and the marauding Angli raiders who may be massing forces in the east, near Arthur's sister and those he has sworn to protect. But their biggest threat is an enemy within: Urien, Arthur's rival and the man Gyan was treaty-bound to marry until she broke that promise for Arthur's love. When Urien becomes chieftain of his clan, his increase in wealth and power is matched only by the magnitude of his hatred of Arthur and Gyan-and his threat to their infant son. Morning's Journey, sequel to the critically acclaimed Dawnflight, propels the reader from the heights of triumph to the depths of despair, through the struggles of some of the most fascinating characters in all of Arthurian literature. Those struggles are exacerbated by the characters' own flawed choices. Gyan and Arthur must learn that while extending forgiveness to others may be difficult, forgiveness of self is the most excruciating-yet ultimately the most healing-step of the entire journey.

This book was slightly too heavy for me to read with brain fog from the flu!

About the Author

Kim Headlee lives on a farm in southwestern Virginia with her family, cats, goats, Great Pyrenees goat guards, and assorted wildlife. People and creatures come and go, but the cave and the 250-year-old house ruins—the latter having been occupied as recently as the mid-twentieth century—seem to be sticking around for a while yet.

Kim is a Seattle native and a direct descendent of twentieth-century Russian nobility. Her grandmother was a childhood friend of the doomed Grand Duchess Anastasia, and the romantic yet tragic story of how Lydia escaped Communist Russia with the aid of her American husband will most certainly one day fuel one of Kim’s novels. Another novel in the queue will involve her husband’s ancestor, the seventh-century proto-Viking king of the Swedish colony in Russia.

For the time being, however, Kim has plenty of work to do in creating her projected 8-book Arthurian series, The Dragon’s Dove Chronicles, and other novels under her imprint, Pendragon Cove Press. She has been a published novelist since 1999, beginning with the original edition of Dawnflight (Sonnet Books, Simon & Schuster, ISBN 0671020412).

HE’S HELL ON WHEELS.

Tall, dark, and dangerously handsome, Zane “Tracker” Colter is the strong, silent type of tattooed muscle biker who drives women wild. But as a master of strategy for the outlaw MC club, Sinner’s Tribe, he doesn’t have time to play around with groupies and biker chicks-especially when he can’t stop thinking about Evie, the girl who got away…

SHE’S PLAYING WITH FIRE.

Evie’s been in love with Zane ever since they were children-until he broke her heart and disappeared. Now he’s back in her life, bigger and badder than ever. Zane is stunned by how beautiful and confident Evie’s become, using her artistic talent to customize motorcycles. He wants her so bad, he’d ride through fire to win her back. There’s one problem: Evie is dating his deadliest rival-the leader of the Black Jacks-and if Evie and Zane hook up, there’ll be hell to pay…

Sarah Castille’s Sinner’s Tribe series is:
“Raw, rugged, and romantic.” -Eden Bradley, New York Times bestselling author

“A sexy and dangerous ride!”-Roni Loren, New York Times bestselling author

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Sarah Castille, writes contemporary erotic romance and romantic suspense featuring blazingly hot alpha males and the women who tame them. She is the author of the Redemption series, the Sinner’s Tribe MC series, and the Legal Heat series. A recovering lawyer and caffeine addict, she worked and travelled abroad before trading in her briefcase and stilettos for a handful of magic beans and a home on Vancouver Island.

A gunshot cracked the silence, and then another. Zane's heart pounded and he slid his hand into his cut, closing his fingers around his gun. "Stay here until I come back for you. Hide." He ran back into the store and spotted Shooter just outside the front door, firing his gun into the trees.
"Who is it?” He shouted from the cover of the doorway. “You see Axle? One of the Jacks?"
"Squirrel." Shooter yelled. "Red tail. Tricky little bugger but I got him trapped in that bush."
"Jesus fucking Christ.” Zane ran over to Shooter and grabbed his wrist. “Put the weapon down." He unleashed all his tension in a volley of curses directed at Shooter, his mental state, his mother, and his dubious parentage. "This is a surveillance mission. That means you don’t draw attention to yourself. You don't shoot things. Gunfire has a nasty tendency to rile up civilians and then they call the cops. And right now the ATF are camped out in the sheriff’s office. You want to explain to the fucking ATF why you're shooting squirrels on private property?"
"He was on your bike, gnawing on your seat."
"Gimme that gun." Zane grabbed the weapon and fired three shots into the bush. "Take that you goddamn fucking bastard," he hollered. "You wanna eat my leather? Now you're gonna be eatin' crow."
"You missed."
Zane handed him the gun. "You got a new job now, prospect. Clean my seat, fix the leather, then bring me that fucking squirrel's hide."
"Yes, sir."
Adrenaline pounded through his veins as he returned to the store, whether from the shoot-out or finding out Evie had split with Mark he didn't know, but damned if he could get himself under control. He took a few deep breaths as he crossed through into the shop, clenching and unclenching his fist by his side.
"Evie?"
"Here." Her voice was faint. "Can I come out now?"
He followed her voice to a storage closet at the far end of the shop and found her reaching for a tube of paint on the top shelf.
"I figured I’d tidy up while I was in here and I saw a box of paint I’d forgotten about. Could you get it down for me?" Half in the shadows of the small, musty room, she looked back over her shoulder. "I'm not quite tall enough."
Zane walked up behind her and grabbed the box. His body brushed up against her, his hips against her ass, his chest to her back, his chin brushing over her floral-scented hair.
Walk away. Walk away. Walk the hell away.
He slid his free hand around her waist and pulled her against his body. So perfect. So right.
"Zane." Her voice came out in a choked whisper.
"You're not with Mark?" He leaned down and pressed his lips to her ear, inhaling her scent of jasmine as the adrenaline streamed through his veins, straight down to his groin.
"No."
His hand splayed over her stomach, pulling her close, and he nuzzled the hair away from her neck. "You got a man, Evie?"
"No." Her voice wavered. "But . . . I kinda . . .”
He shoved the box onto a lower shelf and reached around to catch her jaw in his hand, pulling her head back against his shoulder, exposing her neck to the heated slide of his lips. Somewhere, in the foggy recesses of his mind, he knew he was being too rough, but he was barely in control and rough was as gentle as he could be. "So no one's gonna shoot me between the eyes if I do this?" With his thumb he gently stroked the underside of her breast.
Evie sucked in a sharp breath, trembled. "No."
His hand slid higher, tracing over her ribs until he held the full weight of her breast in his palm. "You gonna stop me from touching you, sweetheart?" He feathered kisses along the column of her neck, praying she didn't deny him because he was already so far gone he didn't know if he would be able to stop.
"Zane." She shuddered, her nipples peaking beneath her thin cotton tank top. He circled one taut nipple with his thumb and she groaned and wiggled her ass against his erection, nestled tight in the crack of her cheeks.
"Stop me, Evie,” he whispered. “Because I can't stop myself."
She melted against him with a sigh, her body softening. For the briefest of moments he soared, higher and higher, soaking in her light, her warmth, her essence . . .
He should have known what would happen if he flew too close to the sun.

As the car got closer, he saw how beautiful she was. She wasn’t just beautiful, she was startling, and his entire body shuddered with longing. He’d never felt any- thing like it in his life, but it was as if he suddenly knew with absolute certainty that he was looking at the woman he would spend his whole life with.
He stopped breathing. She literally took his breath away. His heart pounded with something that felt more like sadness than attraction. It was a completely new feel- ing to him, and one he would only ever have once in his life. Could it be that he was feeling what his father and the other old shifters had always spoken of? Was he looking at his fated mate?

He dismissed the idea out of hand. His father believed in such things, all the shifters did, but Zac never saw them as anything more than the romantic notions of old men with broken hearts. Those men lived cruel lives and it was understandable they would come up with ways of explaining the pain they suffered. If any- thing, Zac thought it was something only experienced by shifters. Suddenly, he wasn’t so sure.

Guest Post from Jennifer Ryan

Top 5 Reasons We All Fall for Cowboys

#5 All that sexy hotness packed into a tight pair of jeans. Need I say more? Okay, we could talk about their sculpted muscles beneath sun-kissed skin from all that hard work. *Fans face.*

#4 Cowboy kindness. It’s the manners that get me. All that, “Yes, ma’am,” and opening doors for their ladies. They tip their hats and smile so nice, all with a gleam in their squinted eyes.

#3 They’re animal lovers. Whether it’s a barn cat or their favorite horse, Cowboys care for the animals they tend. It’s in their nurturing spirit. Don’t we all just drool when we see a hot cowboy in the cab of his truck with his trusty dog right beside him?

#2 They’ve got a wild side. How else can you explain their crazy need to get on a bucking bull? Or ride like the wind on the back of a horse? It’s that fun-loving side that’s got them dancing in the local saloon and chasing their favorite cowgirl and stealing a kiss.

#1 Strength. Yes please, I do need you to pluck me off my horse with your strong grip at my hips. Lift a heavy bale of hay, or a sack of feed, no problem for our tough guys. But that strength goes deeper than their tight muscles. It’s in their determination to get the job done and go after what they want, to hold onto tradition and a way of life that’s rooted in the land and providing for others. It’s in their dedication to family and home and the woman they love.

Your order might be different. I can only say that for me after you get past the hot guy in a tight pair of jeans with a really fine ass, cowboys have a hell of a lot more going on to temp any cowgirl into falling head over heels for them.

What’s your favorite thing about a cowboy?

A hand settled on his shoulder and shook him. He groggily moaned and tried to open his eyes. The bright sun blinded him until his father leaned over and blocked the light as he stared down at Dane.
“Dad?”
“Are you okay, son? Is anything broken?”
“My head hurts. Ankle, too, but nothing is broken but my pride. I fell off my damn horse.”
“Okay, now. I’ll get you home. Can you get up?”
“I think so.” Dane pressed his hands down at his sides and rose to sitting. The wet piece of fabric fell from his head and landed on his bare belly, along with the blue feather that fluttered into his lap. “Where is she?”
“Who?”
“The girl.”
“Dane, no one is here.”
“She helped me. She’s got to be around here somewhere.”
“There’s no one for miles.”
“How did you find me?”
“Your horse came home without you. I know you like to ride along the river, so I followed your trail.” His dad cocked his head, his eyes taking on a thoughtful gleam. “I did think I heard you whistle for me.”
“I passed out.”
“Must have been the wind in the trees.”
Dane didn’t think so. He pinched the end of the feather between his thumb and index finger and stared at it. He scanned the riverbank and out toward the hills. He didn’t see her anywhere. He didn’t understand the way his chest went tight and the sadness that overtook him. Nothing but his regret that he didn’t get to thank her or say goodbye. He never got her name.
His dad held out his hand. Dane took it. His father pulled him up, and Dane stood on his good leg. He tested out his twisted ankle. The slight pressure sent a bolt of pain up his leg.
“How’s your vision?”
“Better.”
“You did a good job using your shirt to bind that ankle and staunch the bleeding on your head.”
“I didn’t. She did.”
His father eyed him, shaking his head side to side. “Dane—”
“I’m telling you, Dad, there was a girl. She helped me.”
“Okay, son. I believe you, but I didn’t see anyone out here with you. I don’t know where she could have gone. We’re in the middle of nowhere.”
Which was the reason Dane liked it out here so much. Still, how did she get out here, and where did she go?
He lifted himself up into the saddle and grabbed the reins on the horse his father brought back for him to ride. He kept his eyes trained, searching the entire area the whole way back home, but he saw nothing, no one.
Dane went back to the spot beside the river more than a dozen times, looking for his dark-haired, blue-eyed angel. He never found her, but he’d never forget her either.

Camille Dumaine was dragging her feet as she walked from the beach at the Coronado Navy SEAL training compound, her almost-thirty-year-old bones feeling every jarring step of her just completed six-mile jog in heavy boots on wet sand under a bright, ninety-degree California sun. Fun, fun, fun!
Didnt help that she was sweating like a pig or that one of the swabbies in the newbie class had barfed all over her duringsugar cookies, an exercise designed to punish. Also didnt help that she heard a male voice call out, Yo, Camo! The CO wants to see you.
It was Trond Sigurdsson, whose Navy SEAL nickname was Easy. All SEALs got appropriate, and not-so-appropriate, nicknames when they first entered BUD/S training, Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL. Goose, Whiz, Stud, Dog, K–4, Geek, Spidey, Zombie, F.U., JAM, Slick. Trond, or Easy, was a mite lazy, known to always look for the easy way.
Same nicknaming was true of the elite WEALS, Women on Earth, Air, Land, and Sea, the sister unit to the SEALs, of which Camille was a charter member, two years of training and five years on duty now. Thus Camilles nickname of Camo, which wasnt a play on her name, or not totally, but was based her ability to camouflage herself, no matter the setting. Being invisible in a crowd could be invaluable for a special forces operative, male or female, shed learned on more than one occasion. It was one of the prime reasons shed been recruited to begin with.
A chameleon, thats what she would put on her résumé, if she had one. Who knew, growing up in New Orleanss upscale Garden District, that being of average height and weight, with plain brown hair and eyes, and just a touch of Creole coloring in her skin, would be such an asset? Certainly not her, and definitely not her father and mother, Dr. Emile Dumaine and Dr. Jeannette Dumaine, world-renowned professors of Southern studies at Tulane University and authors of numerous books on the subject, or her overachieving brother, Alain Dumaine, who was a NASA rocket scientist(No kidding! There really are rocket scientists.)currently teaching at Princeton University. But she had learned early on that, with the aid of makeup, clothing, a wig, even something as simple as posture or hand gestures, she could change herself into whatever she wanted to be. (Honest, Mother, I wasn’t in the French Quarter after midnight. You heard the police description of those underage kids, drunk as skunks. And they thought one was me? Blond, six foot tall, boobs out to here. Ha, ha, ha.)
I need to shower first, she told Easy.

I think Mac means now. Theyve been holding off the meeting til you got back from your run.” He sniffed the air and took a step back, even as he spoke, and then grinned. Easy knew well and good that SEALs and WEALS had to work just as hard, physically, after theyd earned their trident pins, to keep in shape. Smelling ripe was not so unusual. The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in battle” was a familiar mantra. Just make sure you stand downwind,” Trond suggested.
A meeting? He mentioned a meeting? She went immediately alert. Rumors had been circulating for weeks about a new mission. One that involved taking down those African scumbags who had been kidnapping young girls for sex slaves. Boko Haram, or whatever terrorist-du-jour group felt compelled to perform atrocities for some self-professed higher good. Camille felt passionately about what was being done to these innocent children in the name of religion, and she wanted in on this mission. Partly she was infuriated by a womens rights issue, but it was also her history as a Creole that fueled her fire. Camilles great-grandmother many times removed—her namesake, actually—had been sold at one of the famous pre–Civil War Quadroon Balls when she was only fifteen.
She watched as another man joined Easy. The similarities, and the differences, between the two men were immediately apparent. Both were very tall, probably six foot four, lean, and well muscled, but whereas Easys attireathletic shorts, drab green SEAL T-shirt and baseball cap, socks and boondockers—said military to the bone, this guy wore a golf shirt tucked into khaki pants with a belt sporting an odd buckle in the shape of wings, designer loafers without socks, and a spiffy gold watch. Whereas Easy looked as if he was about to work the O-course, the other man carried an over-the-shoulder, high-end, leather laptop case, more suited to Simi Valley. The most dramatic difference was between Easys dark high-and-tight haircut, and the new guys light brown hair spritzed into deliberate disarray. The pale blue eyes they both shared were the gravy on this feast for the eyes.
Camille wasnt drawn to overendowed men, especially ones who were so vain they moussed their hair in the morning, especially since she worked in testosterone central where muscles were the norm, but holy moly! This man, probably no more than thirty, was the epitome of sex on the hoof.
She licked her lips and forced herself to calm down. I look like hell, she reminded herself.

On a good day, this superior male specimen wouldn’t give me a passing glance. After three

failed near-marriages, I do not need another complication. Wash your mind, girl. While Im at it, I better check to make sure Im not drooling. Your brother, I presume? she said to Easy.
How could you tell? Easy said with a laugh. Camo, this is my brother Harek Sigurdsson. Harek”—he nodded his head in her directionthis is Camille Dumaine, the female Navy SEAL I told you about.
