Excerpt
Someone to Care
by Mary Balogh

Marcel Lamarr, Marquess of Dorchester and Viola Kingsley have both found themselves stranded by carriage woes in a country village where a fair is about to take place. Marcel had made advances to Viola fifteen years before, when she was the married mother of young children, but she had repulsed his advances. Now he persuades her to spend the day at the fair with him and the evening at a dance on the village green:

They joined the lines for a country dance, less vigorous, more intricate than the reel. He was an elegant, accomplished dancer, as Viola well remembered. He also had a gift for focusing his attention upon his partner, even when he was performing some figures of the set with another.
How wonderful it was, she thought as she danced, the cool evening air on her face and arms below her shawl, to be someone's focus of attention, to be made to feel even for just a short while that she was the only person in the world who really mattered. It was not that she craved attention all the time. Far from it. She never had. But oh, sometimes it felt wonderful. They were surrounded by pretty, laughing young women, several of whom were darting half frightened, half appreciative glances at the formidable stranger in their midst, but he appeared to see no one but her.
It was all artifice, of course. It was all part of his appeal, and part of the danger. But it did not matter. She was not for a moment deceived by it. When the dancing was over for the evening, or perhaps even before it ended, they would return to their rooms at the inn, and tomorrow they would be on their separate ways and would very probably never see each other again. She did not mingle with the ton any longer.
So tonight—this evening—was to be enjoyed for what it was. A brief escape offered by fate.
All the sets were country dances or reels. They were what the villagers and farmers from the surrounding countryside knew and wanted. Viola and Mr. Lamarr—Marcel—danced two of them and watched a few more. But when one tune started he lifted a finger as though to stop her from saying anything, listened intently for a moment, and then turned to her.
"One could dance a waltz to this," he said.
She listened too and agreed. But no one else was waltzing. The dancers were in line, performing steps with which Viola was unfamiliar.
"We will waltz." It was an imperious command.
"Oh, hardly," she protested.
But he was holding out a hand for hers. "I believe waltzing is something you and I never did together, Viola," he said. "We will right that wrong. Come."
"Marcel." She frowned.
"Ah," he said. "I like it—the sound of you speaking my name. But come." He took her hand, and she did not resist as he led her about the green to the side nearest the church, where there were no people, perhaps because full night had fallen and the light from the lamps did not penetrate this far. Here there was heavy shade, though not total darkness. It was a clear night, illumined by both moonlight and starlight.
"You will waltz with me here," he said. It was still not a question. He was offering her no choice. Neither, of course, was he coercing her.
"But people will see," she protested.
"And?" She was aware that his eyebrows were raised. "They will see us dancing together. Scandalous goings on indeed."
"Oh, very well," she said, raising her left hand to set on his shoulder as his right arm came about her waist. How could she possibly resist? She had always thought the waltz the most romantic dance ever invented, yet there had been no such thing when she was young. There were still people who thought there was something scandalous about it, a man and a woman dancing a whole set exclusively with each other, face to face, their hands touching each other.
He took her free hand in his, listened a moment, and then led her into a waltz, twirling about the uneven ground of the village green, the sounds of voices and laughter seeming far away though they were only just beyond the shadows. She was very aware of his hands, the one resting firmly against the arch of her back at the waist, the other clasped about hers. She was aware that there was only an inch of space between his evening coat and her bosom, that their legs occasionally touched, that he was looking down at her, that she was looking back. She could not see him clearly in the darkness, but she knew his eyes were on hers. She could feel his body heat, smell his cologne, feel his magnetism. She could hear his breath.
She did not know how long it went on. Probably no longer than ten minutes. The dance had already been in progress, after all, when they started. It might have been forever. Viola forgot everything except the waltz and the man with whom she danced it in silence.
"Viola," he said softly next to her ear when the music stopped. He did not immediately release her, and she made no move to extricate herself from his arms. "Let us go see what is behind the church, shall we?"
A churchyard, she supposed. But actually there was a sort of meadow beyond that, sloping downward to a river she had only half noticed this morning from the carriage window. A willow tree leaned over from the bank and almost touched the water. A humpbacked stone bridge crossed the river a short way to their left. It must all be very picturesque in the daylight. But so was the rest of the village.
They stood halfway between the low churchyard wall and the river, which winked in the moonlight, and listened to the slight rushing sound of water. The music began again, but the sound of it and of voices and laughter seemed far away now, part of some other world that did not concern them. His arm, through which her hand had been drawn, came about her waist to draw her to his side, and she wondered idly, not if she ought to allow it, but if she would. She made no move to bat his arm away or to take a step to the side. Rather, she leaned against him.
She would allow it, then. But she was in no danger. She knew what he was about. She understood. It did not matter.
He nudged her head onto his shoulder, lifted her chin with his long fingers, and bent his face to hers to kiss her.

ARC Review and Giveaway: From Duke Till Dawn by Eva Leigh

Series:     London Underground #1
Pub. Date:May 30, 2017
Publisher:Avon
Length:384 pages
Source:Edelweiss

Following The Wicked Quills of London series, Eva Leigh is continuing the theme of unconventional heroines of the commoner class paired with intriguing heroes of the nobility in this new London Underground series. Fans of the rags-to-riches trope will surely enjoy watching these women of questionable moral character get their hooks into dashing dukes and enticing earls.

Alexander Lewis, Duke of Greyland is a staid and stuffy lord with an air of vulnerability. After losing his heart to a disappearing widow, Greyland has now been jilted by his intended bride and must show himself to the lords and ladies of society to prove that he is not pining away in the ducal mansion. Despite his outward display of the utmost propriety, our poor duke feels quite unlovable and believes there is something wrong with him. This first introduction to Greyland got my empathy engaged and created a soft spot for the duke with this reader. Unfortunately, that was to the detriment of the heroine of this story.

Cassandra Blake is a swindler from Southwark, having grown up in the streets after her father expired in debtor's prison. She learned the art of the con as she matured, and played the beautiful destitute widow as a means to bilk men out of their money. This was the method of Cassandra's first encounter with our desirous duke, after which she disappeared, crushing his spurned heart in the process. Two years later, Cassandra will come face-to-face with Greyland as she assists London's finest to part with their funds inside a gaming hell. Unfortunately for her, knowing that Cassandra was a con artist and had crushed our hero's heart predisposed me not to like her character. Greyland got to my hole of empathy first and filled it up before I could consider Cassandra's tragic childhood and rough upbringing. It didn't help that she was obsessed with his privation and her privilege, and she attempted to make him feel bad for the circumstances of his birth. So I tended to nitpick her character flaws without much forgiveness for a hard-lived life.

Greyland's prior entanglement with Cassandra and his lingering feelings made the betrayal, once discovered, all the more poignant. I could not fault him for the spark of hate he felt, and felt bad that he despaired all the more for his unlovable self-identity. However, I did enjoy watching the stuffy duke come alive with his entree into the criminal underground to aid his deceptive damsel. Greyland learned that he thrived on the excitement and danger, and was tired of the mundane matters which he faced daily. I especially loved that our uptight duke had a naughty side, and became quite the capable dirty talker once he and Cassandra rekindled their intimacy.

The betrayal of Cassandra by her business partner was a multi-faceted plot device. As the betrayer becomes the betrayed, she must walk a mile in the shoes of her victims, and she sees for the first time just how hurtful her actions may have been. The search for the missing business partner and funds also allowed our H/h to be thrown together in dangerous and titillating situations, which heightened their desire, and sparked and magnified the old feelings each had. I did feel like the duke bent his beliefs and understanding more than the heroine, but hope that we will see them in a more equal light as the series progresses.

I recommend this story to fans of historical romance, specifically the rags-to-riches trope. I am particularly interested in the story of Amina and the Earl of Langdon, so I will be watching for the next release date. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the publisher, Avon.

ARC Review & Author Interview: Snared by Jennifer Estep

Series:     Elemental Assassin #16
Pub. Date:April 25, 2017
Publisher:Pocket Books
Length:400 pages
Source:NetGalley

Gin Blanco is one of my favorite heroines in urban fantasy. She is a kickass assassin and crime lord (kinda), but she also is altruistic with a huge heart. Even though her main talent is killing people, Gin uses that power for good and is taking out all the big bads and nasties around Ashland. I love the dynamic between her cold and calculating side mixed with her vulnerability and love for her family and friends. And I am in absolute LUST over her cooking... LUST I tell you. I can't read one of these books without having some serious cravings for barbecue, mac & cheese, and good southern comfort food.

A Q&A with Mary Hogan, author of THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTO

Q&A with Mary Hogan

What’s the story behind THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTO?  How did the book come to be?

I first had the idea for this book 24 years ago! I’m not kidding. In 1992, my husband, actor Robert Hogan, was in an off-Broadway play called On the Bum, also starring Cynthia Nixon and Campbell Scott. The play was set in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, several years after the epic flood. The characters talked about a “lake in the sky” which piqued my curiosity. A few days later, I went to the library to read about such strange geography. That’s when I read the real story of the Johnstown disaster. Wow. I was blown away. What a great story! I held my breath for 24 years worrying that someone would write my book before I got a chance to. There are other books out there about the flood, but nothing like mine.

Diversity in Romance - Guest Post by Laura Brown

Hiya everyone!
Please help me welcome to the blog a new voice for diversity in romance, Ms. Laura Brown! Happy release day, Laura! I am very intrigued about this new release featuring hearing-impaired characters. I love unique heroes and heroines and I don't think I have ever read from the perspective of the hearing-impaired. So this is a definite one-click for me. Check out Signs of Attraction, and keep reading for Laura's perspective on the importance of diversity in romance.

Diversity in Romance

by Laura Brown

The diversity movement in the publishing world is huge right now, and I love every second of it. This is not a trend. This is fixing the gross imbalance of books available, especially with mainstream availability.

I love romance books, have been reading them for years. One day I was reading a book and the hero was not white. That instantly grabbed my attention, then made me very, very sad. A non-white hero shouldn’t be a nice surprise, it should be part of the norm.

The same goes for sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability.

I can count on one hand the number of romances I’ve found with a deaf or hard of hearing character. And to date, from the books I’ve read, I’ve found exactly one that was handled with respect (sadly, still with a long list of inaccuracies). The others, simply put, didn’t do their research.

I’ve known my entire life that having a hearing loss means most of the world around me has assumptions about what hearing loss means. And 99% of those assumptions are wrong. So when I see a book has a character who is deaf or hard of hearing, my first instinct is to be worried.

Which led me to realize: why am I not writing these characters?

I don’t know of any other romance with both main characters with a hearing loss, never mind one being hard of hearing and the other being Deaf (capitalized to denote cultural identity). I didn’t know how well it would be received by my hearing peers. I just knew I had to write it.

Writing about hearing loss came easily. The hardest part was remembering that I created Carli to have the opposite bad ear as me, which was much more complicated than it should have been! Because I centered this story around my own experiences, there’s a lot of my heart and soul on the page.

I’m sure I can speak for other own voice writers (marginalized writers who write about characters with the same marginalization) when I say that I’m happy to educate and spread awareness through a work of fiction. I hope people who read SIGNS OF ATTRACTION will learn a few things, and perhaps change some of the previously incorrect information they had. And I hope readers will seek out own voice authors, to learn authentic stories from people who differ. It’s one way we can bind people across race, gender, sexuality, and disability.

I hope to be one small part of the journey.

Indie Wednesday Spotlight and Guest Post with Victoria Danann

The Indie Wednesday Spotlight this month is on the bodacious Victoria Danann. Victoria has authored thirteen novels in the paranormal and contemporary romance genre.  Her paranormal series, Knights of the Black Swan, has won Best Paranormal Romance Series three years running by the The Paranormal Romance Guild.

As a lover of all things paranormal and urban fantasy, I am stoked to try out this new-to-me indie author and see what kind of freaky imagination she has! From what I hear, she has some hot and hunky heroes and strong relatable heroines. I am so happy to welcome this author to the blog today... let's find out a little more about her, shall we?

Series:  Wilds of the Bayou #1
Pub. Date:  April 5, 2016
Publisher:  Montlake Romance
Pages:  276

My Rating:
Sultry Scale:

The bones said death was comin’, and the bones never lied.

While on an early morning patrol in the swamps of Whiskey Bayou, Louisiana wildlife agent Gentry Broussard spots a man leaving the home of voodoo priestess Eva Savoie—a man who bears a startling resemblance to his brother, whom Gentry thought he had killed during a drug raid three years earlier. Shaken, the agent enters Eva’s cabin and makes a bloody discovery: the old woman has been brutally murdered.

With no jurisdiction over the case, he’s forced to leave the investigation to the local sheriff, until Eva’s beautiful heir, Celestine, receives a series of gruesome threats. As Gentry’s involvement deepens and more victims turn up, can he untangle the secrets behind Eva’s murder and protect Celestine from the same fate? Or will an old family curse finally have its way?

From award-winning author Susannah Sandlin comes the first book in the Wilds of the Bayou series.

Susannah Sandlin is a master at world building. I can't think of another author that draws me into the setting of the story quite like she does. I was flying at 30,000 feet while reading but swore I could feel the swamp humidity and hear the mosquitos buzzing. I love that she weaves local culture and legends into her tales as well. This story set down in the swamps of Southern Louisiana combines Creole and Native American culture, and a little of the voodoo religion as well.

Stackin' the Shelves #6 and RT Readers and Writers Roundup Recap

Hello Bambinas!
Welcome back to Stackin' the Shelves, the weekly feature where I showcase all the books I have accepted for review, one-clicked, won or borrowed from the library!  This edition of StS is going to be a little longer since I missed last week and need to recap RT Readers and Writers Roundup, where I met so many nice and fun authors.  Have you picked up any of these reads or did you attend the RT Roundup?

So for my birthday weekend, I decided to hit up the RT Readers & Writers Roundup in League City, Texas at the South Shore Harbor Resort.  Our hotel rooms weren't great - they were outdated with small beds, and I had holes in my sheets and ceiling!  But comfort aside, we had a pretty good time.

Friday Night:  Group Dinner! A few of us readers and bloggers went to dinner at a hibachi place (my first time) with Mo Mabie, Aly Martinez, Tara Sivec, Erin Noelle, KD Robichaux, Jessica Prince, and Katheryn Perez.  Then we headed back to the hotel bar for fun and drinks with all those authors plus B.T. Urruela, K.L. Grayson, Aurora Rose Reynolds, CJ Roberts, Jas T. Ward, B.L. Marsh and Colleen Hoover.

Saturday:  The signing from 10am-2pm, followed by author showcase panels. I had fun at the signing, despite it being hot as Hades! So many excited people at these events takes a toll on my introverted self - I get all peopled out!  I also managed to pick up someone else's evil germs at this event and now have the devil of a flu. The author panels were very informative - though I did hear some grumbling from ticket holders. The people who bought the $10 signing only tickets were allowed in to all of the events that us VIP ticket holders paid dearly for.  Seeing as I paid over $100 for my ticket, that was not very fair. But, oh next time I know to buy the cheaper ticket!.  I attended panels for Liliana Hart and her husband, Scott Silveri; CJ Roberts and Emma Chase; R.K. Lilley and Tara Sivec; and Colleen Hoover, Anna Todd, K.L. Grayson and B.T. Urruela. All of these were very interesting - I loved getting to know the authors better.

Sunday:  Breakfast with the authors, bloggers and librarians.  This was a nice buffet style breakfast where I got to meet some fellow bloggers and share our table with CJ Roberts.  I have already read CJ's books - but she is such a nice, open and interesting person that I can't wait for her next project.

My haul from the signing itself - personalized copies and giveaways for the blog.

This is all the swag and giveaway stuff I got for the blog.  I never know what to do with swag
and feel bad grabbing a lot of it (because I know how much it costs).  This time I literally
had authors throwing swag at me, so I think I need to do a giveaway soon.
What do you guys do with swag?
