Rant: False 5-Star Reviews

Hello Readers-

I'm feeling a bit ranty today. Why, you ask? Because of false 5-star reviews. And I am not talking about the "fake" reviews where people are creating fake profiles to leave fake reviews (that's a-whole-nother issue). I am talking about reviewers, bloggers, street team members, or anyone who got a free copy of the book for an honest review, only to leave a false positive.

We even see the reviews with that caveat in them: I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Why, then, does this new or upcoming release have ONLY five-star reviews that all sound very familiar? Statistically speaking, it is not believable that every single person who was provided an ARC (for an honest review) felt the same way about a book. Check out the below sampling of rating stats for new and upcoming releases:

The above stats are from books that I have read or am in the process of reading for an honest review. ALL of the 5-star reviews are from people who received an advanced copy of the book. I actually volunteered to participate in the ARC program for these books based on the star ratings the book was getting. Imagine my surprise and annoyance when I am expecting the ultimate in reads, the glorious 5-star, and what I am faced with is a lackluster 2-star.

Am I being a bitch? I know people rate books differently and we all feel different when we are reading. But I feel like I am seeing a lot of guilt ratings... what my friend Deanna (from Deanna's World) and I sometimes call "pity stars". This issue arises when you are reading something for an author who you really like, or who is really sweet, so you feel guilty giving the book an honest rating because you don't want to hurt the author's feelings. Now, I was raised in the South so I grew up being taught that you should only say something nice (or not say anything at all). So I admit that I have problems with this, and may (in the past) have been guilty of bumping up my 2-star rating to a 3-star, or maybe even a 3-star to a 4-star. But never have I ever given out an unwarranted 5-star rating. 5-stars are my holy grail. I reserve that rating for that book that is absolutely to-die-for and that I recommend to ALL of my friends. But after this latest round of annoyance for me, I am vowing to do away with the pity star. I feel I owe that to myself, to my readers who are relying on my reviews when deciding on a book, and to the author who has asked for an honest review. And listen, just because you don't rate a book 5-stars does not mean that the book is terrible. And just because you rate a book at a lower level does not mean that you have to write a bitchy review.

So let's look at rating systems. Below are the standard Goodreads and Amazon Rating Systems. This is what Goodreads and Amazon tell you if you hover over the stars before you give a rating:

5 Stars: It was amazing (GR) / I loved it (Amazon).

4 Stars: I really liked it (GR) / I like it (Amazon).

3 Stars: I liked it (GR) / It was ok (Amazon).

2 Stars: It was okay (GR) / I don't like it (Amazon).

1 Star: I did not like it (GR) / I hate it (Amazon).

Since I most commonly use Goodreads and Amazon, I use a variation of those rating systems. Here's mine:

5 Stars: This book is amazing and a must read. I will recommend it to all my friends.

4 Stars: This book was great, but there was something missing or some aspect I didn't like.

3 Stars: Good book and still recommendable to my friends.

2 Stars: I did not really enjoy the book, but my OCD kept me reading.

1 Star: I did not like the book. I struggled to finish it and it made me ranty.
DNF: The book was not for me. I abandoned it before finishing.

I guess I have not really addressed why this issue is making me so ranty. And its not just that its statistically not believable for all advance reviewers to have absolutely lurved a book. It's because - as a reader - I rely on these ratings! When I'm trying to decide what book to read, or what ARC to accept, I look at the star ratings on Goodreads and Amazon. They help me decide whether I'm gonna pick up this book or not. So seeing all these 5-star reviews definitely has an impact. And picking up a book and expecting one thing, only to have something vastly different, will make me ranty reader. I feel like I have been let down by my fellow readers. And that's not a very good feeling.

For this week's Tuesday Teaser, I actually got the ARC to review from NetGalley. Yay!

The latest installment from Chicagoland begins a new story arc where new baddies and old baddies converge into one threat against Ethan, Merit, their relationship, Cadogen and vampires in general. This is a nice change of pace from previous books where the threats from the supernatural and mundanes tended to be separate aspects of the story.

This book picks up where Blood Games left off... with the hint of Ethan's maker, Balthasar, returning from the (un)dead. The Balthasar character turns out to be more of a threat to Merit, as you will see from early on, he has a scary ability to affect her mind. Of course, this brings out all of Ethan's protective instincts that we know and love. Merit's character is a bit softer and more feminine in this book. And, as much as we love our kickass sentinel, it was nice to see her feel a bit seductive and girly. She got to play her damsel in distress role, but without losing her street cred.

I was happy to see more of Morgan in this story... and it appears the Morgan of old may be making more of an appearance in future books. I am looking forward to this as I have been disappointed in the way Morgan's character acted and handled things after Celina's bad deeds. Though this book does provide insight into the reasons for Morgan's standoff behavior and leadership style. So perhaps Morgan will be able to redeem himself.

And speaking of redemption, we got a sneak peek suggesting that Joshua Merit may actually have a heart under his pompous sanctimonious exterior! His behavior was doubly surprising, and gives us hope for him in the future.

All-in-all, I give this latest story arc a thumbs up. I think it will play out well over the next few books, and I look forward to reading along.

Side note... I have been picturing Ethan as an Alexander Skarsgaard type throughout these books. But Merit refers to him now as a David Beckham look-alike. This brings all new (and yummy) possibilities to the table!

Looking into his eyes, she was terrified by what she saw there. There was no soul in him, he truly was a man with no morals, no compassion. So, this book was not what I was expecting. I was provided an advanced copy of this book for review. It was well-written to be the author's first book, and I see great potential for her future writing career. The villains were some of the most sadistic and creepy characters that I have ever read. The (non-practicing) psychologist in me would really like to study Ms. Brightmore's brain to see how she came up with some of this material!

The setting for this story is a small town in Lousiana, and its told in a third person alternating POV. We have Brady, the sexy alpha male sheriff, who uses all those southern endearments that sound so good in a drawl (like sugar, and darlin'). We don't meet the female lead and tortured heroine, Gwyn, until the fourth chapter. I didn't connect with Gwyn for some reason - I'm not really sure why. I really liked all the secondary characters in this book, particularly Hailey and Joan, who exuded that southern hospitality that I loved growing up with. There is also a psycho ex-girlfriend who takes that stereotype above and beyond what I have seen in other books. I don't want to say anything else about the plot because I'm afraid to give away spoilers.

Unfortunately, although well-written, the material was just not for me. It was too graphic. I like dark romances, but I didn't consider this a dark romance. It was more like a suspense/thriller with a side line of romance. The first chapter involved a sexually sadistic serial killer that was so graphic, I didn't think I would continue the book. I didn't think these graphic scenes were necessary to the telling of the story, and I would have enjoyed it more if they were glossed over or at least less detailed. If I had to make one recommendation to someone who hasn't read the book, I would say to skip or skim Chapter 1.

Will I continue reading the series? Yes, I think so. There was a big cliffhanger at the end of this book, and I would like to see where it goes. I just hope future books are a little less graphic - a little less blood and gore.

Now, Merit and Ethan must put their passion on pause to figure out who's really responsible for the murder before all hell breaks loose...

This was a nice little novella featuring Ethan, Merit, Gabriel and Damien. It takes them out of the usual setting in Chicago, to a lovely valley in Colorado. (I love Colorado... I wouldn't mind living there one day.) It was nice to change settings after being embroiled in the Chicago drama for the past books.

Ethan and Merit venture to Colorado on vacation, but fall into the middle of an ancient feud between vampires and shifters. They had to call in reinforcements in the form of the yummy Gabriel and delectable Damien. I'm not sure why I am so drawn to the shifters in this series - but I am. Maybe Ms. Neill could be persuaded to give Damien a novella?

This is a short review for a short novella. This one includes romance, drama, murder, and forced spelunking! it's worth the read, so don't skip it as you continue the Chicagoland series.

Review: Blood Games by Chloe Neill

A killer is stalking Chicago, preying on humans and leaving his victims with magical souvenirs. The CPD hasn’t been able to track the assailant, and as the body count rises, the city is running out of options. Vampires and humans aren’t on great terms, but murder makes for strange bedfellows. Can Merit find the killer before she becomes a target?

I listened to this book in audio format, so I wasn't able to make my usual highlights and notes that I use in my reviews. The Audible narrator for this book was Sophie Eastlake, and she does a very good job narrating... she is exceptional at switching between voices and accents. I am glad the audio version held my interest I could get some cleaning and chores done around my house as I listened.

Blood Games picks up where Wild Things left off, with Ethan's challenge to Darius to take over the Presidium. There is the standard mystery or two for Merit to solve with the Ombuddies and Jonah. I really liked Ethan in this book and felt like I connected more with him than I did in the past. I would love if the author would switch the POV to Ethan occasionally... instead of getting solely Merit's POV. A new vampire appears that has a long history with Ethan - and she's bitchy enough to hate on the spot. I am surprised that this is the first we are hearing of her. The drama with the GP was great in this installment... and the outcome of the whole challenge thing was surprising. I forget why Ethan started the whole fake proposing thing, but its pretty funny. Sadly there were no shifters in this book, other than a short cameo by Jeff.

I felt like this book picked back up after the last couple didn't hold my interest as well. Favorite scene this book? Ethan and Merit in the shower. The narrator did an outstanding job with the french accents there! This one was also a tad more steamy than we have seen in the past... and I would like to see the heat factor ramped up even more.

Warning: there is somewhat of a cliffhanger at the end. It gives us an idea of what the drama will be in the next book.

This is the first episode of a five-episode novella series.

This was a quick steamy read that you can knock out in an hour or so. It's a serial, and I have said enough how much I hate serials so I won't rant here. I will just say that it's hard to rate and review an incomplete story.

Derek is a ruggedly sexy environmentally conscious developer of real estate. Frankie is a classy uptight real estate agent. Both have secrets or dramas that we get hints of in this first episode... but the main aspect of the story was the building sexual tension between the two. And it was H-O-T. Frankie's dreams alone are enough to get your motor running. Frankie is insecure but Derek has enough confidence for them both. When they get together, I'm sure it will be explosive.

This storyline involving real estate development was a first for me. I had to go see what pink ivory looked like as I had never heard of it. But the longer I spend as a lawyer, the more I like reading stories about other professions. Hopefully that isn't saying something about my job satisfaction! This story kinda reminds me of Trust in Advertising by Victoria Michaels, which was a 5* read for me. This one has the same potential, it's just too early to tell. I look forward to when the serial is finished.
