Review: Soul Taken

Buy on Amazon

This installment of the Mercy Thompson series was a bit unexpected for me. This Harvester storyline was not something I envisioned, but I have to say that it fits in with the time of the year (near Halloween) quite well, complete with a pumpkin patch. It reminded me of an old school scary movie with a scythe-wielding maniac stealing souls around the Tri-Cities. (It’s a sickle!)

People have been going missing all around the Tri-Cities, and it seems that someone is stealing those with minor magical abilities all about town. However, following a mysterious visit by Marsailla, we realize that Wulfe and Stefan are part of the lost. Mercy and the Pack are tasked with finding the missing vampires or risk losing their alliance with the seethe. It was interesting to learn the backstory of Marsailla, Wulfe, Stefan and Bonarata.

As we go down this rabbit hole of a horror film, there are a few surprises. The sickle is a magical item that seems Uber creepy, and Zee has been on the hunt for it for centuries. But can he be trusted with a tool that bears death and destruction? The Pack actually seemed to take a backseat in this installment, and we see more of Mercy and Adam teaming up to tackle the danger. There was some good action in the story as we uncovered the mystery. Though there are enough things left unresolved for the series to continue moving forward, though I have a feeling we are getting close to the end.

We also learned some of the mysterious past of Sherwood, and exactly how his identity ties in. This was one issue left unresolved, so I am sure it will play out more in future books, or perhaps a spinoff series. That would be fun.

I received an advanced copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
