Keep your friends close but your enemies within stabbing distance.

One important lesson I’ve learned in the assassination business is that to be the best you have to roll with the punches. Now that I’m queen of Ashland’s underworld—by default, not by choice—a lot more punches are being thrown my way. But I suppose that’s the price of victory for taking down some of the underworld’s top dogs. Good thing I have my Ice and Stone magic to help me survive my volatile new position. Just when I think things are finally settling down, someone tries to murder me during a hush-hush underworld meeting. But the real surprise is how strangely familiar my shadowy assailant seems to be.

My job is to maintain order among killers, crooks, and thieves, and soon I’m embroiled in a bloody game where the ability to keep secrets could be the greatest superpower of all. My enemies have all sharpened their knives and laid their traps, waiting for me to fall. But this Spider weaves her own webs of death…

This was another great installment of the Elemental Assassin series from Jennifer Estep. While I did not enjoy it quite as much as I did Black Widow, I know that I can never go wrong with this author. This series focuses on an anti-hero, a kickass female assassin who is also a soft touch. While Gin is not outwardly lovey dovey, you cannot deny how much she cares for her friends and family.

This book starts off with Gin ensconced in her new role as Queen of the Underworld. Gin is quickly learning that this job, which she didn't even want, is tedious. Who wants to listen to the gripes and snipes of underworld crime lords - they are worse than teenage drama queens! Luckily the tedium is interrupted by attempted murder, and Gin gets back in the game. And for once, it appears that she may not have been the actual target. This installment of the series gives us some additional background on Gin's past, and an enemy so old she can't even remember at first. But things fall into place and Gin gets to do what she does best, with the help of some of those underworld underlings.

I liked that we got some new characters in this book - Lorelei and Mallory and a bit more Jade. While Lorelei did not endear herself to me for most of the book, by the end I was content with her position in the underworld, and I think we will see these 3 ladies having more dealings with Gin in the future. I like seeing the girl power - even if its of the criminal nature! My smutty little heart has also enjoyed a bit more naked fun with Owen in the last two books... I don't remember these books being particularly steamy in the past, so I am enjoying the smexytime now. The intimate scenes don't rise to the level of smut by any standards, but they do help to show Gin in a more feminine light, which is nice. Badass assassins have needs too - and you can't go wrong with Mr. Coal Black Hair and Violet Eyes. Yum!

A bold, seductive laird meets his passionate match in a scintillating Highland romance from New York Timesbestselling author Lynsay Sands...

Sword fighting, swearing, and riding astride come naturally to Saidh Buchanan. Simpering and holding her tongue—definitely not. Raised alongside seven boisterous brothers, Saidh has little interest in saddling herself with a husband... until she glimpses the new Laird MacDonnell bathing naked in the loch. Though she's far from a proper lady, the brawny Highlander makes Saidh feel every inch a woman.

She has an angel's looks, a warrior's temper, and seeks out his kisses with wanton eagerness. Little wonder that Greer is intrigued by his comely guest. When reckless desire overtakes them, he's more than willing to make an honest woman of her. But Saidh is the target of a hidden enemy, and Greer faces the battle of his life to safeguard the woman he wants above all others.

I enjoyed this historical Scottish romance from Lynsay Sands. It was entertaining and well-written, particularly the Scottish dialect.  I didn't realize it was a the third book in the series when I picked this up, so it made me go back and read the earlier books.

I absolutely adored the heroine, Saidh (even though I don't know how to pronounce her name). She is not a simpering female in the slightest. I think I would have probably been a lot like her if I lived during the time period. I definitely would have preferred riding astride, climbing trees and sword fighting to sitting around darning socks. Saidh was the perfect match for Greer, the mercenary turned laird. He respected her abilities and didn't try to curb her tomboy behavior. In fact, they encouraged the outrageous behavior in one another.

I also really liked the secondary and tertiary characters in this book... namely Saidh's seven brothers and the lady friends we met briefly in the beginning of the story. I hope we see some of their brothers get their own book, particularly Aulay.

There was a bit of suspense, but that aspect seemed familiar. I have read another highlander book with a similar plot of murder and mayhem. Though here, the betrayal caught me by surprise... I didn't see it coming until almost the end.

If you are looking for a light fun fluff read, don't pass this one up.  I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

“A lady does no’ climb trees.”

“Ye’ve told me that three times now, lad,” Saidh responded dryly, shifting her foot up to the next branch and hauling herself upward.

“Aye, but ye’re still doing it, so I thought mayhap ye had no’ heard me,” Alpin said sharply. When she didn’t respond to that, he added, “I could climb up there to pick the apples and throw them down, ye ken.”

“Then there would be no one to catch them,” Saidh pointed out.

“I was thinking mayhap ye could stay below and catch them, as a lady should,” he said, sounding much put upon.

Saidh plucked the apple she’d been climbing to and glanced down to see where the boy was before dropping it in his direction. Once Alpin had caught it, and set it with the others they’d already gathered, she started to climb down and asked, “Just how old are ye, Alpin?”

“Nine,” he said proudly.

“Hmmm,” she muttered, easing down another branch. “Ye act ninety.”

“Laird MacDonnell says the same thing,” Alpin announced with disgust.

“Then we are in agreement,” Saidh said cheerfully, easing down another branch.

“I suspect the two o’ ye would agree on a lot o’ things,” Alpin said sounding annoyed.

“I suspect yer right,” Saidh said with a laugh and jumped to the ground. She took a moment to brush her hands together, then released her skirt from where she’d caught it up and stuck it through her belt for the climb, then beamed at the boy and said, “Is that no’ nice?”

“Nay,” Alpin assured her heavily. “I’m thinking ’tis a bad thing.”

Her eyebrows rose in surprise. “Why is that?”

“Because ye both just go about doing as ye wish with little regard fer how a laird or lady should behave,” he said firmly. “Someone needs to take the two o’ ye in hand and teach ye—What the devil are ye doing now?” he interrupted himself to ask with dismay when Saidh moved over to the apples, caught her skirt up and knelt to begin placing the apples in the bag-type affair she’d made of her skirt.

Sandra’s blood raced through her veins as she approached the large double doors of the very elite Club Desire, set high on Camelback Mountain in Paradise Valley, Arizona.

Her old dungeon in New York had looked like an office building compared to this semi-gothic castle that had seemingly erupted out of the desert mountainside. The explosions of stars scattered across the dark sky behind it only added to the effect.

Even the energy surrounding this place exuded sex and kink like musky perfume lacing through the tang of creosote and desert night. If she hadn’t come here willingly, she might feel like a fairy princess being lured to her doom. If she were very lucky, it would be an erotic doom.

She smiled at the thought and forced her attention to the man standing just to the side of the large double doors. As she approached, he gave her the same head-to-toe perusal that most men did.

She mentally shrugged. After all, this was a sex club, not a YMCA. Here it wasn’t rude to peruse a stranger like that.

The man was attractive and well muscled, but from the way he carried himself she could tell he wasn’t a Dom. Maybe an employee who was a kink enthusiast?

“Good evening. How may I help you?” His voice confirmed her opinion. Not that he wasn’t masculine; he definitely was. But Doms had a certain air about them, a certain underlying arrogance and presence that laced their every word and action, in or out of the dungeon. A description that most Doms would balk at. And something that this man lacked.

Sandra rolled her eyes at her inner monologue and gripped the envelope in her hand a little tighter until the sound of the crumpling paper made her stop. She hesitated for a long moment, trying to find something coherent to say. She finally settled on, “I’m here to petition for membership?” She held up the crumpled envelope, locking her knees against the urge to leave.

She’d just run from New York to the familiar city where she’d grown up. She’d risked dredging up old, painful memories to come here, so she refused to run again.

She would rebuild her life here, and wouldn’t let anyone tell her otherwise. Now she had to figure out how to make that happen, and how to keep her resolve strong while she did.

The man held out his hand and she placed the envelope on his open palm. She’d never even broken the seal, so she wasn’t sure what her old Dungeon Master had written. He’d only told her that if she ever wished to join this particular dungeon he knew the owner, and he had given her a written recommendation.

Now that she’d handed it over, curiosity burned inside her to know what he’d said about her. But it was too late to ask for it back now.

“Please, come inside.” The man opened one of the large doors, and a welcome wall of cold air hit them. “We’re a few months from when the summer nights are nearly as hot as the days, but it’s still a bit warm out here.”

He motioned her inside and down a hallway to a comfortable waiting area surrounded by large windows that looked out over the main floor of the dungeon. Or at least she assumed this was the main floor. There were few basement levels in Phoenix.

Sandra took a chair that gave her the best view of the floor and the play currently in progress. She was alone in the waiting area, so she shamelessly leaned closer to the glass to soak up all the erotic details of the scenes before her.

Wet heat flooded her core. She definitely missed this.

Sandra had discovered she liked to watch—especially the things she was too much of a coward to try for herself, which seemed to encompass a lot so far. She hadn’t really explored too many of the different kinks. At the New York club, she had made friends with the other subs and gotten comfortable with the idea of the overall lifestyle. From there it had been easy to meet a Dom she liked and begin to explore the lifestyle that way.

The play session directly in front of her involved a short, curvy woman wearing only a red thong with a matching red rope wrapped around her torso so that it lifted and plumped her full breasts—a push-up bra, bondage-style. Her arms were stretched high over her head, her wrists bound in the same red rope and attached to large rings, strategically placed for a myriad of kinks and purposes. She stood barefoot, balanced on the balls of her feet since her arms were stretched so high, but the way she moved conveyed arousal and sensuality¾anything but discomfort.

The skin of her shapely ass was already striped with red marks from the leather straps of the flogger her Dom currently wielded.

The man stood with the confident stance of a Dom, dressed in black leather pants and a sleeveless vest. He held the flogger loosely, his hungry gaze devouring the sub before him, his hard cock easily visible against the front of his tight pants.

His face held an intensity as the next blow fell, and Sandra clenched her jaw, waiting to hear the sound of leather hitting flesh. Too many years of surviving abuse from her mother had left her with a phobia of those types of sounds. But when the sound never came, she relaxed and enjoyed the flash of arousal spiced with adrenaline that spiked through her veins.

Wherever Cassandra Darkin goes, fire is sure to follow. It's not until she's swept into the arms of a handsome, infuriating stranger that she learns she's responsible for the fires. As it turns out, Cassandra is a fire mage...and with her gift comes a blazing desire for sins of the flesh.

With his pretenatural ability to influence the thoughts of others, Garrett Sterling is sent to gather Cassandra for the Order of the M.U.SE. He's entirely unprepared for his immediate attraction to the comely little firestarter. But it's an attraction that he must quell, even as his body craves her touch and her fiery, sensual hunger.

For Garrett's gift has a dark side...and the moment he begins to care too much for Cassandra, he knows he will doom her to an inescapable fate.

I don't read many paranormal historical romances, other than those involving time travel. I'm not sure why - but I don't like the mixing of the genres as much. That being said, this a nice little quick read. It kind of made me think of a historical X-Men or A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. You have the Order of the M.U.S.E. - a group of individuals with psychic or "sensual" abilities. These individuals served to protect the monarch, or I imagine the public in general as the series progresses.

The time period of this book is Regency England, and it felt like the book was more historically detailed than supernatural (if that makes sense). We got to experience the Bon Ton, Almack's, period dress, Prinny, and a bit of scandal and suspense. The supernatural element was limited to lesser details of the MUSE's abilities - it was a light touch, not overwhelmingly paranormal.

One aspect of the book that was a little outside of the historical norm was the sensuality element. Our heroine, Cassandra, has come into her powers as a fire mage. This has some interesting side effects... mainly that Cassie's passion burns as hot and fast as her fire power. As Garret, Lord Stanstead, is paired up with Cassie to help her, er, release some tension, a sweet romance between the two unfolds. The relationship felt a tad superficial sometimes, but I liked both characters well enough and enjoyed reading about their blossoming romance.

There were no really bad villains in the story - not like we are accustomed to seeing in the standard paranormal where the main characters are going up against the big bad of the story. But there are some interesting secondary characters, all with some sort of ability, that I think will be paired up in future installments. The Duke and Vesta most likely, and maybe Meg with the bedlamite guy (can't remember his name).

The title is a bit of a misnomer as the story focused more on Cassandra than it did Lord Stanstead... and his "curse" is not resolved or explained overmuch. I look forward to reading more about the various abilities we ran across from fire mages to telepaths to finders to time thiefs. It all sounds very interesting, and I will continue on with the series.
