Audiobook Review: Beard in Mind by Penny Reid

Series:Winston Brothers #4
Pub. Date:Nov. 8, 2017
Publisher:Cipher-Naught
Narrator:Chris Brinkley
Angela Dawe
Length:13 hrs 19 min
Source:Audible

Beard in Mind is the fourth installment of the fun and quirky Winston Brothers series, set in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee - a place very close to my heart. Reading and listening to this series never fails to make me nostalgic for home, even if Green Valley is a fictional place (based on one of the many similar towns in and around the mountains).

Audiobook Review: How to Date Your Dragon by Molly Harper

Series:     Mystic Bayou #1
Pub. Date:Jan. 23, 2018
Publisher:Audible Studios
Narrators:Amanda Ronconi
Jonathan Davis
Length:6 hrs 33 min
Source:Audible Romance

I thought this story was just as cute and fun as all get out, but that is kinda what I expect from Molly Harper. I can't wait for the next books in the Mystic Bayou series to see what the magi are getting up to down in the Lousiana swamp.

This book is an Audible Original - so the print copy has yet to be released. But I encourage you to listen to the audiobook if you are able. The narrators did a great job... but I really really liked the female narrator Amanda Ronconi. She did a great (and believable) Cajun accent, probably the best I have heard in an audiobook. I wish she had narrated the whole book just to have continuity, but Jonathan Davis didn't do a bad job either.

ARC Review: Cajun Crazy by Sandra Hill

Series:     Cajun #1
Pub. Date:Nov 28, 2017
Publisher:Avon
Length:384 pages
Source:Edelweiss

Having just moved away from New Orleans, I thought Cajun Crazy would be a good read to test my homesickness for Louisiana. Nola to Arizona was a big move for me, so I am still adjusting to the differences of living outside the South. I have not read the 10 preceding Cajun books, but I tripped along just fine and didn't feel like I was missing vital information or backstory.

Simone LeDeux is an independent heroine who has been unlucky in love, a fact she attributes to her weakness for Cajun men. After another failed romance and her mother's knee surgery, Simone leaves the police force in Chicago and returns home to the bayou in Louisiana. Though this time she won't be returning to law enforcement, and will instead being opening a private investigation and legal services firm with her gal pal, Helene. Simone's disastrous love life resonated with me, even despite me not having the long list of failed marriages. I totally understood her being attracted to the wrong guys and being utterly disappointed when they showed their true colors. I also commended her for stepping out on the ledge to take a chance on a new career - which I was comparing to my own move across the country. It's all about new adventures and fearless females.

Sassy Southern Belle Lilly Atkins is back again in this third installment of the Misadventures of Miss Lilly. This series follows the unapologetically southern attorney and her wacky girl posse in a slapstick blend of chick lit and cozy mystery.

ARC Review: Blood of the Earth by Faith Hunter

Series:     Soulwood #1
Pub. Date:Aug. 2, 2016
Publisher:Berkley
Length:384 pages
Source:NetGalley

So this was my first read by Faith Hunter... I know, I know - I have been living under a rock! I have been meaning to start the Jane Yellowrock series, but I'm so far behind that I need to pick a month where I can work them all in at once.  Soon, I promise! This is a new spinoff series from Jane Yellowrock, but I didn't feel confuzzled for not having read the main series. So you should be fine if you have been keeping me company under my rock.

Pub. Date:  Jan. 1, 2013

Review: Counsellor by Celia Aaron

Series:  Acquisition #1
Pub. Date:  Sept. 28, 2015
Publisher:  Self-Pub
Pages:  209
Source:  Kindle Unlimited

I got drawn in by the cover of this book when I recognized the Oak Alley Plantation. I was even more stoked when I saw that it was set in New Orleans, as I don't think I have ever read a dark romance set here. Unfortunately, this story didn't work for me.

Review: Demon Hunting in the Deep South by Lexi George

Series: Demon Hunting #2
Pub. Date:  March 22, 2016
Publisher:  Lyrical Press
Pages:  369

I was feeling a bit stressed due to some doggy aging issues happening in my house, so I decided to head back to Hannah, Alabama for a serving of Lexi George's zany southern colloquialisms and over-the-top southern stereotypes. Of course I can't forget the skeazy demons and yummalicious demon hunters which are congregating in this podunk town full of unique and endearingly hilarious characters.

Review: Demon Hunting in Dixie by Lexi George

Series:  Demon Hunting #1
Pub. Date:  Jan. 1, 2011
Publisher:  Lyrical Press
Pages:  385

The Demon Hunting series promises to be a slapstick good time, perfect when you want pure entertainment, classic southernisms, and huge belly laughs.  One southern girl to another, I could totally tell that Lexi George grew up in the South because her characterization  and one-liners were spot on.

"Some boys will keep it, some will break it, and some boys, they just won't want it. You gotta be careful who you give your heart to..." Slate Declan

First loves, we all got them. Mine is Slate Declan. He was kind, gentle, and caring. Still, he managed to break my heart. So I put miles between us, and eventually, my heart healed.

I haven’t seen Slate in years, but a couple friends and I are going back to the Bayou for the summer. While I’m visiting my hometown, I’m going to look up Slate Declan. And I plan to break his heart, just as he did mine. I'll remind him of what he has lost, and then I'll prove to him that I’ve moved on.

It should be real easy, right?

Well, let me tell you, Slate Declan is not the same guy that I left behind. And there’s another problem. How do you break someone’s heart when they no longer have one?

My Rating:
Sultry Scale:

Slate picks up where Jax left off, this time focusing on the middle Declan brother and Rayna. I knew this book was going to be more intense as Slate had some major issues - particularly being an addict - but I don't remember that his injuries were mentioned in the first book. So I'm not gonna mention much about them here as I don't want to give spoilers.

Rayna and Slate were childhood loves, until something happened that broke Rayna's heart. That drove her out of the Bayou and now, 6 years later, she is back in town. Obviously there are unresolved issues between her and Slate, but once she sees him again, she pretty much forgets about that vengeance plan, and sees he needs help. Hence the Detox Declan Brother plan gets underway. Of course throwing these two back together leads to lots of sexual tension and some pretty steamy sexytime. I liked both characters... even without feeling a deep connection with them. I just don't think that level of connection and emotional detail is able to be worked into a 200 page book. But neither got on my nerves, which is always good when I am reading a new adult book.

All in all, this was a good quick read. I managed to get it read during one leg of my flight - which was about 75 minutes. I would recommend it to new adult fans who like those damaged heroes that are up for fixin' by the heroine.

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

excerpt

Untitled1

“Oh, come on! You can throw harder than that,” I say catching the ball.

A wily grin spreads across Slate’s mouth. “I don’t want to hurt your girlie hand.”

“You won’t.” I whip the baseball back to him, and he easily catches it.

“Hey, Grams wanted me to ask if you’re coming over for dinner Saturday,” he says, tossing the ball up in the air and then catching it in his mitt.

Since Jamison’s death, home hasn’t been the same. My parents are either arguing or not speaking at all. So, I’m rarely there. I hang out at Slate’s or Emmie’s, weekends mostly at Slate’s seeing as Emmie’s mom usually has some kind of event or pageant scheduled for her. “I don’t know.” I shrug.

He stops playing with the ball and looks at me. “What? You got something else going on?”

“Well,” I set my glove on my hip, “Timmy Baxter did ask me out to the movies.”

Slate’s face scrunches up. “Like on a date?”

“I think so,” I say with a grimace.

“And what are you going to do at the movies?”

“Watch it, and maybe kiss,” I say, knowing that’s what most couples do at the movies.

“Kiss!” His eyebrows lift. “Have you ever kissed a boy before?”

“No.” I look down, kicking some dirt on the ground with my sneaker, suddenly feeling weird talking about this with Slate.

“But you want to kiss Timmy Baxter?”

“I don’t know.” I glance up at him. “Maybe.”

He walks over to me. “Show me.” He drops his glove on the ground.

“Show you what?”

“How you’re gonna kiss Timmy Baxter.”

“You want me to kiss you?”

“Yeah.” He lifts his hand. “Here, show me on my hand.”

“That’s stupid.”

“Don’t you want to know if you’re doing it right?” He shoves his fist closer to my face. “Go on.”

Never backing down from a challenge presented by Slate, I grab his balled hand and pull it up to my mouth. I close my eyes and press my lips against his warm skin. Opening my eyes, he’s curiously watching me. “Not too bad.” He drops his hand. “Now, let me show you how a boy’s supposed to kiss you.”

“Okay.” I go to thrust out my hand, but he grabs it, yanks me against him, and lowers his head. He’s going to kiss me on the…Wow! His lips touch mine and those dormant butterflies come swarming into my belly. He pulls away with a smile. “And if he tries to stick his tongue in your mouth, knee him in the balls.”

“You kissed me!”

“Ah, it was just a peck.”

“It was a kiss! Ow…I should knee you in the balls.”

“What, you didn’t like it?”

“You’re a jerk, Slate Declan.” I whack him in the chest with my glove. “I thought you were going to kiss my hand, too!”

“Your hand is all dirty. Besides, I wanted to be sure I got there before anyone else did.”

“Got where,” I ask, and a smile ruffles his mouth. What is he talking about? He’s not making any sense, and darn it, my lips are still tingling where his mouth touched me. “I’m going home!”

He starts laughing.

“Jerk!” I stomp away.

“Hey, Rayna,” he calls after me, still laughing.

I flip around with a snarky, “What?”

“Have fun on your date Saturday.”
