Shadow and Ice is a fun and action-packed new series from Gena Showalter, that has lots of room to grow as we move forward. The Terra (Earth) realm has been invaded by immortal warriors who have come to fight for dominance and the spoils of the All War. So this series is part paranormal, part science fiction, and part steamy romance!

Our hero for this first installment is Knox of Iviland, an immortal warrior who can control shadows and has won several of the previous All Wars. One thing is driving Knox, and that thing is vengeance with a capital V. He was ruthless and driven, and didn't quite know what to do with himself when a spitfire human starts derailing his long-standing plans and motivations. I really liked Knox as a hero. Yes, he was battle-hardened and jaded, but he also had a vulnerable side, and he did go against all his instincts when it came to our heroine.

Speaking of, Vale London, our heroine, is a feisty mortal who unwittingly stumbles onto our immortal warriors and into the the All War with her foster sister, Nola. Vale has to quickly adapt to her new reality, and stave off fighting and danger at numerous turns. This of course isn't as much of a hardship as it could've been, as Vale has Knox by her side. I did like Vale for the most part, there were a few times that I thought she was too stubborn, but it was a minor issue. I did like the abilities she gained through the All War, and I hope we see more of this couple in the future.

The All War itself was an interesting dynamic. Multiple realms fighting over new territory because they have destroyed their own. Each seems to have a sadistic ruler, or some other reason that they are motivated to win the war. As the story progresses, you will see why we will likely have lots of good fodder for future books. I am definitely looking forward to meeting some of the other heroes and heroines.
