This is a book sure to make all my smutty followers happy, because it was ooh la la steamy. Or given that we are operating in Texas for this series... I should get my southern on and say it was just plain HAWT.
We meet Abigail Moore as a teenager in small town Texas, where she has quite the reputation for being a wild child. Unfortunately, Abby's reputation was undeserved and her life was made difficult by a snooty old woman, mother to her childhood boyfriend. Jump ahead 20 years and Abby is returning to help her ailing mother, and she finds that not much has changed with the snooty old folks of Willow Fork. I felt so sorry for Abby and the way she was treated as a teenager, however I wished she had a little more backbone as an adult. Otherwise, I really liked Abby as a heroine. She was fun, but also responsible. I admired the fact that she built a life for herself after she was run out of town at such a young age.
Jack Barnes and Sam Fleetwood are two permanent points to a polyamorous triangle. They are as different as night and day... which I think made them the perfect combo for a polyamory story. Jack is dark, broody, damaged and dominant. Sam is blonde, flirty, charming and beta. Coming from a rough childhood in foster care, Jack and Sam are best friends who like to share. I imagine living in such a small town made their lifestyle difficult, both to explore and to gain acceptance from uptight town people. But Jack Barnes doesn't really care what anyone thinks, and he is devious when he wants to put someone in their place. Jack was really more my type of hero than Sam, but I thought they were paired perfectly together. I certainly wouldn't mind taking Abby's place in that sandwich. Sigh, wishful thinking.
This story is definitely insta-lust and the romance moves along quite quickly. I liked how caring and protective Jack and Sam were of Abby, I only wish she trusted them more. If you like lots of steam and menage, then you won't be disappointed with the scenes in this book.
I enjoyed the conflict in the town, especially seeing Jack take care of business. But I was also glad that Abby did have some friends, and that there were others willing to stand up to the hateful old-schoolers. Ruth Echols was a great villainous character. She's an uptight and snooty old biddy that is used to getting her way and had a pack of cronies (and half the town) catering to her prejudicial whims. I was so looking forward to her getting put in her place.
I did notice a couple inconsistencies in the story that made me go back and re-read to see if I missed something... but overall they were minor and didn't interfere with my enjoyment of this red hot romantica.
