Review: Lover, Divine by A. Star

Lover, Divine by A. Star
Series: Mythos: Gods & Lovers, #1

My Rating:
Sultry Scale:

For fans of the Oracle of Delphi series...and for those who aren't...

Born into one of the wealthiest families in Ireland, Siobhan Law has status, privilege, and a secret: The Greek gods of Olympus and their kingdom in the clouds are real, and her family acts as one of their agents on Earth.

When the beautiful immortal celeste Liam Argyros shows up claiming to have come to Earth to deal in the affairs of the divine, Siobhan finds herself unable to resist his charms. New to the game of passion and seduction, she quickly ends up in over her head, sinking deeper with every attempt Liam makes to win her over.

But Liam’s divine mission is far more complex than she ever imagined and nothing is truly as it seems. Because Liam has a secret of his own: He is Apollo, Olympian god of the Sun, and his mission will never be complete until he has claimed Siobhan’s heart forever.

I had high hopes for this book - as I love the mythology-based tropes. But this one fell flat. It did not feel like a love story, which is what I was expecting. The character development was a bit weak, and the action was anticlimactic. The way that it was written, attempting to type in the Irish dialect (I assume), was very distracting for me. Nothin' abou' this was easy ta rea'. Some of that type of inflection is fine, but this whole book was written in a form of ebonics, and it detracted from the story.

Siobhan (sometimed called Marie) was an okay character... but came across as a spoiled rich girl when she threw her tantrums. Apollo was unfeeling and somewhat dull - he stated that he loved Siobhan, but he was telling instead of showing. I didn't feel a connection to any of the characters. Basically, this was the story of Apollo impregnating a mortal woman to birth several of his numerous demi-god children. There was nothing exclusive between the God and the mortal, she is just one of his many lovers.

Apparently this is a prequel to a young adult series about the Pythia, Prophecy of the Most Beautiful. Perhaps readers of that series will enjoy this one more.

I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
